The
Dandardel Prefix was registered in 1966.
Sometime before this the Orears had taken some Welsh ponies to care
for from their old friend Perry Carlile.
Later they became interested in the Welsh ponies and leased 5 from
Perry.
In the early 1960s J.D. became really sold on the breed and while on
a family vacation visited Farnley Farm in White Post, Virginia, and
subsequently purchased a filly from a pen of yearlings.
The filly, FARNLEY HET (Farnley Conqueror x Farnley Wiple), a
chestnut with a blaze and white stockings, fire in her eye and a spirit to
challenge the imagination.
This mare became one of the foundations for the Dandardel ponies.
Het raised 17 chestnut foals, 2 of her granddaughters are still in
the herd. Through the years she
was successful in the show ring in halter, mare and foal and western
classes. Her offspring were
consistent winners in the foal classes.
Het died in 1992 at the age of 27 years.
One of the mares leased was VAYNOR TANGO (Vaynor Goldie x Vaynor
Swift), who was imported from South Wales.
During the 1960s she was owned by Perry Carlile and cared for by the
Orears. After Perry’s death she
was purchased from his estate.
During the years she raised 14 foals. The Orear’s still have to of her
granddaughters in the herd today, one of which is Dandardel Vee Georgette.
Tango died in 1981.
FARNLEY SEA URCHIN (Farnley Nautilus x Farnley Monica) completed the
foundation for the Dandardel ponies.
He consistently sired bright colored ponies with white markings.
Even though Sea Urchin is gone, his legacy will live on.
Through the years the Orears have worked towards color and quality.
In 1978 they imported TWYFORD STORM (Twyford Gamecock x Littlefield
Snowflake). He was a dark
chestnut with light mane and tail with white markings.
Storm was sold to Robert Cornelius of Ridgcrest, CA.
FARNLEY KERNEL (Farnley Pellinore x Farnley Ceres) was purchased in
1982.
Kernel has a great show
record and his get have been consistent winners.
Kernel passed his wonderful disposition on to his offspring, who are
sought after by many breeders.
Many top breeders and judges considered him to be an outstanding example of
the Welsh Mountain Pony. Kernel
died in March 2000.
To bring new blood into the herd, in 1983 J.D. purchased PENRHYN
PUCCINI (Rowfant Peanut x Penrhyn Peachbloom) from Mrs. Ingersoll.
Puccini has been a winner in the show ring, and helped to add
quality, movement and color to our breeding program.
In 1984 J.D. purchased FARNLEY BATON D’OR (Farnley Sunglass x Farnley
Magic Wand).
J.D. had hoped
Baton D’or would mate Kernel in heavy harness, but he did not mature as
large as Kernel. For several
years he was used in the breeding program at Keith Orear’s, resulting in
beautiful foals.
In 1993 J.D. had the opportunity to lease *Menai Silver Buck (Friars
Ranger x Menai Silver Coin).
*Menai Silver Buck was imported to the United States in December 1994.
Private treaty breeding available.
Rowfantina Goldcrest (Farnley Ballad x Rowfantina Odette) was foaled
in 1994.
He came to OWPF as a
weanling. He has produced some
lovely chestnut foals. Even
though Goldcrest is no longer on the Orear farm, his influence can still be
seen.
*ROWFANTINA HIGH HOPES (Bradmore Hadrian x Stoak Honeysuckle) was
imported from England in 1997 as a weanling.
He also produced bright chestnut foals.
GAYFIELDS FFIGARO (Sleight of Hand x Gayfields Fflwrdlis) was leased
as a weanling in 2001.
His
bloodline has introduced a larger Section A pony with wonderful
dispositions, movement, and athleticism to the Dandardel herd.
*FRIARS GOLD CHANCE (Friars Fancyman x Friars Teardrop) was
introduced to the herd in 2006.
He is currently producing beautiful bright chestnut foals.
*MENAI SOLE MIO (Friars Generous x Menai Silver Slippers) is a
beautiful example of a Section A Welsh Mountain Pony.
Mio passes his conformation and his fine head to his offspring.
DANDARDEL SILVER BUCK (*Menai Silver Buck x *Menai Silver Sasha) was
foaled in 2004 and is a great stallion prospect.
He has an extensive pedigree to back up his conformation.
Although J.D. was a very successful and respected breeder of the welsh pony,
his greatest legacy may be the love of the Welsh breed that he passed on to
his children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren.
In all there are 4 generations of Orears that have raised, showed and
loved the Welsh pony. J.D.’s
son Phillip Orear has taken over the care and management of the “Dandardel”
Welsh Pony herd.
Through the years J.D. was always on the lookout for outstanding
ponies to improve his herd.
To
compliment this impressive list of stallioins he owned various mares in
hopes of breeding the perfect Welsh pony.
